The best way to get close to nature is on a slow walking and informative guided hike. Costa Rica is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity in species and ecosystems which is amazing because Costa Rica only covers 0.03% of the world’s surface. That is a huge variety of animal and plant life concentrated in a small space.
Tours are led by naturalists and certified tour guides, many of which have lived their whole lives in the area they are taking you to. They love what they are doing and are immensely proud to show you the beauty of Costa Rica. These hikes are usually off the beaten path in private reserves or on family land that is not open to the public.
With years of history and experience, they will point out and educate you on the animal, insect, and birdlife and you will see the amazing array of plant life too. Each guide has their specialty and can speak in-depth on the topic. They will do everything they can to ensure you have a great experience and leave with a new understanding, knowledge, and appreciation of Costa Rica.
Your guides will have tripods with telescopes and binoculars allowing you to can see the animals and birds and allowing you to get close-up photographs from a distance so as not to disturb nature. They will answer all your questions with enthusiasm.
Depending on what part of Costa Rica you are in will determine what you see and hear.
Tours typically depart early morning, mid-afternoon, or early evening.
The day walks and talks are usually 3 hours or less and the night hikes are about 2 hours.
If you take a day tour it is not redundant to take a night tour as the animal and insect life is quite different, there are even some plants wake up in the night. Taking hiking tours if different areas will allow you to see a larger selection of birds, animals, and plants.
This is a wonderful tour for the whole family and of all ages who are in good health. Some pathways are wheelchair friendly.
